When people talk about senior citizens, they may identify
them by other names such as a retiree, middle aged folk,
empty nester and, the most popular name, baby boomer. All it
means is that the person has moved from the working sector
of their lives into the more sedentary relaxed lifestyle.
This phase of life means the baby boomer can choose for
themselves what they would like to do each morning instead
of getting up and tending to obligations like family and
work.
Retirement, for some people, may seem like a curse. It
doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re the type of baby
boomer who sees retirement as the end , then you’ll be glad
to know that there are at least seven activities that you
can do to get life moving for you again.
Seven Activities That Won’t Let You Sit Around Bored Out
Of Your Mind
Go Travel – Many retirees have dreamed of the day
they could actually relax on vacation without the hassle of
having to go back to work. Well, the time has arrived baby
boomers. It’s time for you to explore the world and all it
has to offer. Whether it’s close by where you live
(something you’ve always meant to go see) or halfway around
the world, traveling is a grand way to stay active, both
with your mind and body.
Expand Your Mind – When you travel, you get the
opportunity to explore new surroundings, seen new sights and
understand different cultures. Make sure to learn all that
you can from your experience. Bear in mind that you don’t
have to travel to learn new things. If you’ve had an
interest to learn a new language or wanted to learn how to
play an instrument, now is the time to go for it. New things
in your life will keep that mind of yours sharp and also
keep you from getting bored.
Mingle With People – When you’re hard at work, it can
be difficult to stay in touch with friends and loved ones.
Now that you’re retired, it’s time to get into touch with
these folks and reconnect with them. You may not realize it
but mingling can do a world of good. Take this opportunity
to go meet new folks, whether it’s joining a cooking club or
an art class. If you’re the type of person who always
enjoyed parties, consider hosting your own party and bring
together old and new friends. Invite your neighbors while
you’re at it. People always have a story to tell and you may
learn that the person down the road isn’t all that different
from you, despite what you may have initially thought.
Bring A Pet Home – Another wonderful way to stay
active is to get yourself a pet. Regardless of what kind of
pet you want (bird, cat, dog, hamster, lizard, etc), nothing
is better than taking care of something living; something
that will give you unconditional love. If you feel like
sitting back in your handsome new
dutailier rocking chair you picked up as a retirement
gift to yourself, your cat or (small dog) can jump up and
keep you company. Are you unable to bring home a pet but
still want to be around animals? Then volunteer your time at
a local animal shelter. There are all kinds of cats and dogs
waiting to be adopted and while they wait, you can show them
love and give them the care they need. You can also dedicate
your time to taking care of a neighbor’s pet when they’re
unable to do so due to illness or going out of town. This
also helps in building friendships with your neighbors.
Good Cause – Get involved with something you feel is
a good cause. Many people are involved with causes that
include children’s rights, eco-friendly movements, animal
rights and so much more. Work with people who share your
same vision about how the world should be; you never know
but you could forge new friendships from it all. Being
involved with a good cause gives your life a purpose.
Take Up Mentoring – As a baby boomer, you have a lot
of things to say and show the younger generation. Share this
information with your grandkids or be surrogate
grandmother/grandfather to neighborhood kids. If your
neighborhood is kid free but you still want to be a mentor,
sign up with a mentoring program, which will enable you to
make an impact on children’s lives. If you love sports, why
not coach a team full of kids? There are many things you can
do with children that can allow you to be a positive
influence on their lives.
Keep Yourself Moving – Stay active. You can join a
gym that has state of the art equipment, swim in a pool (if
it’s included) or join a dance class. If you don’t have that
kind of money, consider taking a walk around the block or
riding a bike. It’s always best to speak with your doctor
before you begin an exercise program. You can also do other
things that involve motion such as planting a garden or
doing some home improvements. There is something out there
for everyone.
Remember, this is the time in your life that you don’t have
to worry about things that made you worry in your 20s, 30s,
40s and 50s. While you are always going to worry when it
comes to your family, you don’t have to be there for them
every second of the day. So, take time out for yourself and
enjoy what life has to offer you. Do any one of these
activities, enjoy yourself and feel energetic about your
life.
